The median sale price of a home in Magna is about $150K less than Salt Lake City and under 30 minutes away from downtown. Kearns comes in as the second most affordable suburb in Salt Lake City. The same distance from Salt Lake City as Magna, you’ll find yourself touring the Natural History Museum of Utah in no time. Home to about 36,700 people, make sure to visit Oquirrh Park which houses the Utah Olympic Oval where you can skate or watch a hockey game.
Slightly more expensive than Kearns, South Salt Lake lands the fourth spot on our list. About 26,800 people live in this Salt Lake City suburb, where you can birdwatch at Tracy Aviary’s Jordan River Nature Center or spend the afternoon at Fitts Park.

Another well-known suburb of Salt Lake City is Murray, where the home prices are about $100K less than in Salt Lake City. Murray has about 50,600 residents and is a great suburb to consider moving to. Whether you take a wagon ride at Wheeler Historic Farm or spend the morning at Murray Park, there’s plenty of activities that make Murray unique.
Just 15 minutes south of Salt Lake City, you can find the suburb of Taylorsville. With a population of 60,500, you’ll be in a smaller suburb while being able to explore Salt Lake City in your free time. If you find yourself moving to Taylorsville, make sure to visit Valley Regional Park or go for a stroll along Little Confluence Trailhead.
Located just west of Taylorsville, is our sixth most affordable suburb, Midvale. About 34,000 people live in Midvale, where you’re only about a 20 minute drive from Salt Lake City. Home to Jordan River Parkway Trail, you can spend time taking in the views of the Jordan River whether you’re biking, walking, or running along the trail.
Drive 20 minutes outside of Salt Lake City and you’ll land in the suburb of West Valley City. With close to 140,200 residents, moving to this affordable suburb can keep you close enough to Salt Lake City without paying the premium for a home there. In West Valley City, make sure to see a concert at USANA Amphitheater and stroll along the Jordan River Parkway Trail. Don’t forget to stop by the Utah Cultural Celebration Center once you move here.
West Jordan claims the eighth spot on our list, with homes about $40K less than Salt Lake City. If you’re lucky to avoid traffic, it’ll only take about 25 minutes to drive into the city. West Jordan has a population of almost 117,000, making it much less than Salt Lake City’s population. Home to Conservation Garden Park and Veterans Memorial Park, you’ll have plenty of outdoor activities to explore during your free time.
About 25 minutes southwest of downtown Salt Lake City is Bluffdale. Located close to Utah Lake, there’s plenty of outdoor adventures to enjoy if you move here. From spending the afternoon at Wardle Fields Regional Park to taking in the views of the Wasatch and Oquirrh Mountain Ranges, you won’t get tired of the Bluffdale’s natural beauty.
If you’ve been living in Salt Lake City for some time, you’ve probably heard about Woods Cross, the final suburb on the list. This affordable city is home to about 11,400 residents, so you’ll have a fraction of Salt Lake City’s population while remaining close to all the city has to offer. Once moving to Woods Cross check out Mills Park or visit nearby Legacy Nature Preserve.
