Sometimes a standard 9-5 job isn’t what you’re looking for at the moment. Maybe you want to get started in real estate but would prefer to gradually transition into a full-time position. Or perhaps you want to pursue other projects and activities in your free time.
If you’re interested in a career in real estate but don’t want to commit to a full-time job, consider working as a part-time real estate agent.
How to become a part-time real estate agent
The requirements for becoming a part-time real estate agent are the same as the requirements to become a full-time real estate agent. Requirements vary by state, but here’s what you can generally expect::
- Be at least 18 or 19 years of age (depending on your state’s requirements)
- You live in the United States
- You have completed a pre-licensing class
- You’ve passed the real estate exam
To obtain a real estate license, you first need to find a reputable real estate school for your pre-licensing class. The course material will teach you how to create and read real estate practices, follow the law, and how to work with buyers, sellers, and other real estate agents and brokers. Some classes are offered online, while others are in-person. Find real estate schools in your area or take an online course from our partner, The CE Shop.
Once you pass the exam and earn a real estate license, your next step is to find a brokerage that’s right for you. Consider interviewing at several brokerages to ensure you’re making the right choice. Keep in mind the benefits offered, Associate Agents are able to choose their own schedule and are paid for individual events they attend - from open houses to home inspections, and more. In some markets, Associate Agents can earn up to $120 per home tour they host.
