About this home
An extraordinary expression of California modernism, the Kubly House was designed by renowned architect Craig Ellwood in 1965. Ellwood's refined architectural style rooted in geometric clarity, structural simplicity, and the guiding principles of Mies Van Der Rohe create a home of remarkable restraint and sophistication. Set among mature landscaping in the Linda Vista neighborhood of Pasadena, this iconic redwood, cantilevered glass pavilion embodies the timeless elegance of mid-century architecture. Defined by its exposed post-and-beam construction, clean horizontal lines, and expansive walls of glass, the residence appears to float effortlessly within its natural surroundings. The thoughtfully designed single-level floor plan features three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and seamless indoor-outdoor living, opening to lush, expansive private grounds and a serene pool-scape. Commissioned by Don and Sally Kubly, the home holds a special place in Pasadena's architectural history, with a connection to Ellwood's celebrated ArtCenter College of Design campus. A rare opportunity to own an architectural masterpiece where design, nature, and history converge.
Linda Vista, located between the Rose Bowl and the Arroyo Seco, is a hillside and residential Pasadena neighborhood with curving view streets and a canyon-edge setting. The neighborhood’s character concentrates around the Rose Bowl loop at Seco Street and Rosemont Avenue, where cyclists, walkers, and weekend crowds set a steady outdoor tempo. Mid-century ranch homes and traditional houses sit behind mature landscaping, with occasional modern rebuilds on larger lots. The Arroyo’s trails and open space shape daily routines more than retail corridors. Nearby cultural anchors like the Norton Simon Museum, the Pasadena Playhouse, and the Gamble House add a distinctly Pasadena cadence.

First Offering: Craig Ellwood Architect - 1965 - Kubly House -- Art Center College of Design was at the center of Don and Sally Kubly's universe; both as alumni, and later when Don became the second president of the institution. At the time, the couple was deeply embedded in the creative fiber of mid-century modern Los Angeles. Attracted to the iconoclastic personality of Craig Ellwood, and cutting-edge work of his firm, the Kublys selected Ellwood to design a modern residence to house their growing family. Working in wood and glass, Ellwood rendered a transparent horizontal box andelevated it like a pavilion amidst the massive gum and oak trees shading the site. Theresulting post and beam structure proved fitting for the Pasadena neighborhood wherehis contemporaries, several of them also Case Study architects, practiced their craft. The Kublys, satisfied in their working relationship with Ellwood, were instrumental in hiring himto design Art Center's hillside campus when the college relocated to Pasadena. Residence is2,156 square feet with a . 61 acre lot, and includes 4 bedrooms, 2 baths, and a swimming pool.
